After taking a decidedly relaxed approach to my 2016 race season, I decided to sign up for 2 half marathons this spring – 2 weeks apart. My bff (Leanne) and I decided we needed to go back to Cleveland for our annual half marathon girls weekend (this would be my 5th half marathon and 3rd half in Cleveland). And to top it off it was the 40th anniversary of the Cleveland Marathon #RunCLE, which for those who may not realize is for Run Cleveland, not rUncle like rAunt as someone travelling with us thought. LOL
Now most of you are probably asking, why do 2 girls from Ontario travel to Cleveland for a race every year? The answer is simple: we really love Cleveland! Cleveland is a great city for a visit, a 4.5 hour drive away makes it an ideal destination race with a great expo (more on that below) and we absolutely love the atmosphere all around the city on race day. Not to mention the shopping, the great food on East 4th Street and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Stay tuned for a post with details of all of our favourite spots in Cleveland.
This year we brought a Cleveland newbie, Tina, with us and it was even more fun to see the magic of “The Land” through her eyes. Tina ran the 10 K as she was prepping to run her 1st half marathon with us 2 weeks later and I am happy to report she is ready to sign on for 2018 with us.
Most race expos are a quick visit to get my race kit and get out, but Cleveland always has interesting vendors (check out P-Rite, www.p-rite.com) and fun activities. This year Brooks had a money blowing booth, but instead of winning money you could win a pair of running shoes. Leanne got selected to enter the booth and I don’t know if I will ever have as much fun at a race expo in my life! Plus she won a pair of shoes!!
Overall a great race through the neighbourhoods of Cleveland (one house even had a beer table set on their lawn and I gladly accepted their generous offer at 9:15 am). Not a PB, but fun as always!
